What is an Access Control System?

07/18/2015 Back To Blog

Access control is exactly what is says, it controls access to designated areas. If there is a place that requires high security, access control is necessary. This limits access to that area, as well as enabling to track and monitor the people coming in and out. In order to gain access to such an area, a person would need to have the proper credentials. Some of the credentials used include a fob key, pin number, or some type of personal characteristic. The characteristic recognition used for access control might include a simple fingerprint. Most locksmiths are familiar with how to install and repair access control systems. What is an Access Control System?

Advantages of an Access Control System

When you are able to control who enters and leaves a specific area, you have more control over certain situations. Many access control systems are used in high traffic, public facilities, such as hospitals, schools and government buildings. These types of facilities are able to record who was at the building at any particular time. This can be especially important given the age in which we currently live. The aforementioned institutions are often a target for criminals of all kinds, need this type of security in place to protect citizens. If someone does something illegal they will quickly be apprehended by the proper authority. With controlled access a person can be given limited access to an area on specific days and times. The system can be programmed so that the persons' credentials will no longer be identified after a certain day and time. Limiting access to a certain part of a building can also protect sensitive information. This is especially important at law firms.

You might wonder how a person is recognized with this type of system. The system has a reader, which recognizes the code or characteristic it reads. The information is scanned and sent directly to a sensor. Once the sensor positively identifies the characteristics it will allow the person entry into a restricted area. Controlled access is especially beneficial in large government buildings and for people who have businesses which call for a level of security above the norm. It is more expensive to have an access control system, but most people will admit it is worth every dime to have this type of security.
